Says disappointing jobs numbers illustrate ‘misplaced’ reliance on government

LITTLE ROCK – Second District Congressional candidate, U.S. Army Reservist and former U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin today released the following statement after the Labor Department reported an increase of 431,000 jobs (including 411,000 temporary Census positions), a 9.7% unemployment rate and 6.8 million long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more), while only adding 41,000 private sector jobs for the month of May:

"I am pleased to learn 431,000 Americans have returned to work. But the fact that 95% of those jobs are temporary Census hires illustrates why a reliance on government to create jobs is misplaced, misguided and mistaken. The small number of private sector jobs added in May is evidence of the uncertainty employers feel for the future. When faced with the prospects of increased taxes by the end of the year, increased government regulation and increased costs thanks to the new health care law, how can we expect them to invest in creating jobs? We need a new approach that makes it easier to create jobs, not harder."
